Dr. Frank Bruni

Biography

Frank Bruni is the Eugene C. Patterson Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. With a career spanning over 25 years in New York, he contributes to discussions on political polarization and media topics through various platforms including the Policy 360 podcast. Since joining Duke's faculty in 2021, Bruni has maintained his role as an Opinion writer, previously serving as a Metro reporter, White House correspondent, and chief restaurant critic for The New York Times. He is best known for his work as an openly gay Op-Ed columnist, receiving the National Lesbian Gay Journalists Association's Randy Shilts Award for his lifetime contributions to LGBTQ+ equality in 2016. Bruni has authored five best-selling books, including "The Age of Grievance" and "The Beauty of Dusk." In addition to his journalistic endeavors, he has taught at prestigious institutions like Princeton University and his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a commencement speaker in 2022, he continues to influence and shape discussions around American politics and the liberal arts education experience.
