Biography

Frank L. Hanley, M.D. is a professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and directs the Children's Heart Center at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. He specializes in pediatric cardiac surgery and has significantly contributed to the development of interventional techniques, focusing on fetal and neonatal treatment of congenital heart disease. Hanley is recognized for developing the unifocalization procedure, which repairs complex congenital heart defects with a single surgery rather than staged operations, making Lucile Packard Children's Hospital a worldwide referral site for such procedures. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and his Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine. Hanley completed his surgical internship and residency in general surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and went on to complete a research fellowship at UCSF’s Cardiovascular Research Institute. He served as chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF and received multiple teaching awards for his contributions. Joining Stanford University in 2001, Hanley was appointed the Lawrence Crowley, M.D. Endowed Professorship in Child Health in December 2004. He is a member of several professional societies and has presented over 75 lectures globally, while authoring more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
