Dr. Jirik received MD subspecialty training in Rheumatology from the University of British Columbia. His research training in molecular biology and immunology was conducted at the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic under the supervision of Dr. Dennis Carson. He was formerly a Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and has been a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary since 2015. His research primarily focuses on the in vivo analysis of gene function, generating models of human disease. He has worked extensively in the fields of inflammation and autoimmunity, particularly in studying arthritis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, and cancer, as well as gene functions and gene-gene interactions. His contributions to understanding DNA repair mechanisms and selenoprotein biology are notable, and he has generated various transgenic mouse models that have significantly advanced the study of auto-inflammatory diseases. As a full member of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, Dr. Jirik continues to engage in impactful research spanning multiple fields, contributing vast knowledge to cancer and immune-mediated disorders.
