Biography

Frank Matero received education in anthropology, architectural preservation, and material conservation. As an educator and conservation practitioner, Matero has shaped architectural conservation discourse and practice over his 35-year career. He is a Professor at the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Director and founder of the Center for Architectural Conservation. Matero is also a member of the Graduate Group in the Department of Art History and a Research Associate at the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. He has taught at several prestigious institutions and has focused on the conservation of historic buildings and archaeological sites, with an emphasis on masonry and earthen construction. His current research focuses on developing frameworks for assessing material risk in relation to climate change, and he has authored over 100 publications.
