Frank Wise is the Samuel B. Eckert Professor of Engineering Emeritus in the School of Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1988 and was named an NSF Presidential Young Investigator in 1989. From 2007 to 2011, he served as the director of the School of Applied and Engineering Physics and in 2017, became the director of the Cornell Center for Materials Research. His primary research focuses on the development of femtosecond-pulse lasers and amplifiers, working on sources of ultrashort optical pulses for applications in basic research laboratories. Currently, his efforts are directed towards fiber lasers and amplifiers, including theoretical studies and commercial development. He investigates the spatiotemporal aspects of nonlinear optical waves, examining how ultrashort light pulses propagate through systems that support multiple transverse modes, such as multimode optical fibers. His work addresses the evolution of these pulses as a function of spatial dimensions and time.
