Biography

Frans Cremers is a professor at Radboud University, situated in the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Radboudumc), where he leads the Blindness Genetics workgroup. His research focuses on the molecular biology of genetic eye diseases, particularly inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) and vitreoretinopathies. Over the years, his team has identified more than 30 genes associated with IRDs and has concentrated on the functional analysis of deep-intronic variants, with a special interest in Stargardt disease due to mutations in the ABCA4 gene. Additionally, he has successfully applied stem cell technology to pinpoint retina-specific splicing defects. His future studies aim to identify modifiers of IRDs, which are essential for accurate diagnoses and genetic counseling in IRDs, laying the groundwork for the successful application of new therapies. Prof. Cremers' work is pivotal not only in advancing scientific understanding but also in enhancing clinical practices related to genetic eye diseases.
