Biography

Frans Pretorius is a Professor of Physics at Princeton University. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His primary research field focuses on Einstein's theory of general relativity, with a particular emphasis on black holes. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of the nature of gravitational wave emission during binary compact object mergers and is a member of the black hole-neutron star community. His studies include critical phenomena associated with the threshold gravitational collapse, the stability dynamics of higher-dimensional black holes, and the nature of singularities that generically appear within black hole cosmological spacetimes. Throughout his career, Pretorius has received several prestigious awards including the Dirac Medal in 2021, the Galileo Galilei Medal in 2021, and the New Horizons Prize in Physics in 2016. He has also been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation.
