Biography

Franz Graf graduated in architecture from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. He worked as a freelance architect in Geneva starting in 1989. Graf served as a lecturer in architecture and construction at the University of Geneva from 1989 to 2006 before becoming a Full Professor of Technology at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio in 2005. He subsequently became an Associate Professor of Architectural Theory and Design at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2007, where he heads the Laboratory of Techniques for the Preservation of Modern Architecture. His research focuses on knowledge of contemporary construction systems and the preservation of 20th-century heritage. Graf has published extensively in major reference works on architects like Perret, Prouvé, and Le Corbusier, among others. Notably, in 2014, he published the reference book on the restoration of modern architecture titled “Histoire matérielle du bâti et projet de sauvegarde.” His contributions to the field continue as he engages in various professional committees and research projects related to architectural preservation.
