Biography

Franz Mali is a scholar of theology, currently engaged in a critical edition and translation of the Opus imperfectum Matthaeum, a significant ancient Christian text. His project focuses on the commentary of the Gospel of Matthew attributed to an anonymous author, which has been mistakenly associated with John Chrysostom throughout history. The original work, composed in a possibly Arian heretical milieu in the 5th century, has been influential among medieval authors, including Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart. Mali is working towards producing the first modern critical edition of the text, which will include a comprehensive introduction, commentary, annotated French translation, and indexes. This edition is anticipated to reignite interest in this neglected treatise and stimulate further investigations into its historical and theological significance. Mali collaborates with an international team of experts in the field to establish a critical text from the significant manuscripts available. The project is tied to his doctoral thesis, exploring the relationship between Chrysostom's authentic commentary and the Opus imperfectum Matthaeum.
