Biography

Professor Pfeiffer conducts research in biomedical X-ray physics, focusing on new imaging methods to improve early diagnosis and to enable detailed studies of illnesses such as cancer, lung diseases, and osteoporosis. His scientific work is characterized by fundamentally oriented research on brilliant X-rays and collaboration with large international research centers, which contributes to applied research and the development of new concepts in radiology. A major achievement of Professor Pfeiffer is the invention of a novel method in X-ray phase-contrast imaging, which has significant diagnostic benefits particularly for lung diseases. He studied physics at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and was awarded his doctorate at the Institut Laue-Langevin in France and the University of Saarbrücken. Following his doctorate, he held a post-doctoral position in Urbana-Champaign, USA, and served as a scientific staff member at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland before becoming an assistant professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale Lausanne in 2008. He was appointed Chair of Biomedical Physics at TUM in 2009 and became the director of the Munich School of BioEngineering in 2016.
