Franz Schilling conducts research in the field of molecular imaging with a focus on the development of novel methods in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). His research emphasizes the characterization and validation of imaging biomarkers, with an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates the development of physical methods, chemical characterization and synthesis of molecular sensors, alongside investigations into biological and medical research questions. Schilling studied physics at the University of Würzburg and the University of California, Berkeley, obtaining his PhD from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) with a focus on nuclear magnetic resonance. He underwent postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge, furthering his interest in molecular imaging. In 2017, he leads an independent research group at the Klinikum rechts der Isar at TUM and was appointed Assistant Professor in 2019 and Associate Professor of Biomedical Magnetic Resonance in 2025.
