Biography

Fred F. Afagh is a Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at Carleton University. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Washington State University, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo. His research primarily focuses on vibrations, structural dynamics, control, and smart structures, exploring topics such as stability theory and elastic stability. His work includes structural modeling of both thin-walled open and closed cross-section beams, dynamic modeling of helicopter rotors, and the analysis of blade-sailing effects on shipboard rotor aircraft. He employs both numerical and analytical methods to control blade-sailing phenomena using smart structures technology, and applies optimization techniques such as genetic algorithms for actuator configuration positioning. Fred has made significant contributions to application development of smart structures in aerospace contexts, focusing on the elastic dynamic stability of structural systems and elements. He has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and conference papers, demonstrating his deep engagement in advancing the field of mechanical engineering and its applications in aerospace.
