Biography

Fred Beekman obtained his master's degree in geophysics from Utrecht University and his doctorate from VU University Amsterdam with a thesis focused on numerical modeling of compressive intraplate deformation. He conducted postdoctoral research in France at IFPen and joined the VU Tectonics Group in 1996. Since 2012, he has served as an assistant professor in the Tectonics Group at Utrecht University. His expertise encompasses the thermo-tectonic evolution of sedimentary basin systems, mantle plume-lithosphere interaction, and geothermal energy resources, alongside the development of coupled analog-numerical modeling methods. His current research centers on exploring and quantifying geothermal energy potential within sedimentary basins. Fred has played a key role in establishing laboratory facilities for tectonic deformation modeling at both VU Amsterdam and Utrecht University. He has been involved in several international research projects as a principal investigator and researcher, has (co-)authored 50 peer-reviewed publications, and has (co-)supervised 14 PhD theses as well as 100 master's and bachelor's theses.
