Dr. Fred Colbourne

Biography

Fred Colbourne is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta, where he has been a faculty member since 2000. His research focuses on neuroprotection, therapeutic hypothermia, and the use of animal models to study ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Colbourne completed his PhD in Basic Medical Sciences in 1995 at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, following his undergraduate studies in Psychology in 1991. He is involved with the Women's and Children's Health Research Institute and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute. His expertise extends to evaluating potential neuroprotective therapies, understanding brain edema, and investigating rehabilitation methods to augment brain plasticity and improve behavioral recovery in stroke patients. Throughout his career, Colbourne has guided numerous graduate and undergraduate students in their research endeavors, fostering a diverse and inclusive lab environment. He is currently mentoring students at various stages of their academic careers, emphasizing the importance of strong academic performance and a genuine interest in neuroscience research. Colbourne has received several mentorship awards and continues to contribute significantly to the field of neurorehabilitation and stroke research.
