Biography

Fred DeWitt is a research-based artist born in Oakland, CA, and currently residing and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles, CA. He holds a BA in Cinema Production from San Francisco State University and an MFA from the University of California, Berkeley. DeWitt's art practice encompasses filmmaking, painting, sculpture, performance, and social practice, where materials serve as cornerstones for cultural liberation and renewal. His recent works incorporate Asian woodblock printing techniques alongside Western oil painting methods, utilizing ink, oil, natural pigments, paper, wood, silk, and canvas to create hybrid motifs. As a narrative history painter, he explores the parallels between 19th-century artistic expressions and present-day realities. His designs for large-scale sculptures and multiples combine representational clues with camouflage aesthetics, patterns, plant life, and symbols of healing and resistance. DeWitt's artwork reflects his experiences as an African American man with disabilities, celebrating the joy and beauty of collective human conquest.
