Biography

Fred van Lieburg is a Full Professor of Religious History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he also serves as Director of History Studies and heads the HDC Centre for Religious History. He is affiliated with the CLUE+ Research Institute, focusing on the intersection of religion with cultural, social, and political realities. His research emphasizes the convergence of various academic traditions and promotes cross-disciplinary approaches. Van Lieburg's ongoing projects include explorations of late Medieval and early modern Protestant clergies in the Netherlands, the international context surrounding the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619), as well as the revivalist movements of Pietism during the 18th and 19th centuries. His interests also encompass religious mobilization and the impact of religion in the Netherlands from 1850 to 1930, as well as the dynamics of strong religious communities in contemporary European contexts, exemplified by the Dutch Bible Belts. He obtained his BA and MA in History from Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam and completed his PhD at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Van Lieburg has also received recognition for his contributions to the field, including the Casimir-Ziegler Award for Humanities in 2006.
