Biography

Fred Volkmar, M.D. is the Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology, as well as the Director of the Yale University Child Study Center at Yale University School of Medicine. He has held the position of Chief of Child Psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he has contributed significantly to the field of child psychology and psychiatry. Dr. Volkmar received his undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Illinois in 1972 before earning his M.D. from Stanford University in 1976. He is a primary author of the autism section in the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-IV and has authored numerous scientific papers, book chapters, and several books on autism, including titles such as 'Asperger’s Syndrome' and 'Health Care for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders'. His extensive work is important in shaping understanding and intervention in autism and related developmental disorders.
