Frederic Béen is an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Environment & Health research group at the Amsterdam Institute for Environment and Health (A-LIFE) of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research bridges the fields of environmental analytical chemistry and data science, with a strong focus on developing advanced tools to detect and characterize contaminants affecting human and environmental health. Frederic’s work predominantly utilizes high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) combined with cheminformatics and machine learning to trace the source, behavior, and impact of a wide range of environmental contaminants. His research spans the entire water cycle, where he detects pollutants in natural and engineered systems and studies the transformations that occur in water treatment processes. Furthermore, his efforts prioritize substances based on their potential hazards to humans and the environment. Currently, Frederic is also advancing the analysis of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) by employing pyrolysis coupled gas chromatography (high-resolution) mass spectrometry (Py-GC-(HR)MS) to improve the accuracy and precision of human exposure assessments for MNPs in complex environmental and biological matrices.
