Biography

Frédéric Bouchard is a philosopher of science and a philosophy of biology specialist at the Université de Montréal. His interdisciplinary research focuses on the theoretical foundations of evolutionary biology and ecology, exploring the relationships between science and society. Bouchard has been a faculty member at the Université de Montréal since 2005 and was the first holder of the ÉSOPE chair in philosophy from 2014 to 2016. He has served as the Associate Vice-Rector for Research, Discovery, Creation, and Innovation at the university from 2015 to 2017, and has led the Interuniversity Research Centre on Science and Technology (CIRST) from 2014 to 2015. His teaching excellence has been recognized with several awards from both the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Université de Montréal. In 2021, he was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada. His research interests include the epistemological questions surrounding the role of scientific expertise in public decisions and the nature of ecological explanations, as well as the philosophical implications of biological individuality. He has published in significant journals and participated in major conferences on these topics.
