Biography

Frederic Cegla aims to solve real world industrial problems through innovative applications of scientific and technological principles derived from the research community. He has performed fundamental scientific studies and has experience delivering consultancy projects for industrial partners while commercializing research findings. Cegla leads the Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) research group focused on experimental measurement and monitoring of defects in the structural properties of engineering components. He holds a prestigious EPSRC-funded fellowship in non-destructive monitoring of engineering infrastructure and leads Imperial’s input into the £36 million ORCA hub for robotics in artificial intelligence for harsh environments. A key success of Cegla’s research has been the formation of the spin-off company Permasense Ltd, which has become a worldwide leader in providing ultrasonic corrosion monitoring systems for the oil and gas industry. His contributions have earned him awards and significant publicity. Cegla has research experience at Imperial College London and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He is a key contributor to the UK RCNDE, which consists of industrial members from six UK universities: Imperial, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Warwick, and Strathclyde. Furthermore, he is an active member of the Institute of Physics (IOP) and currently chairs the Physical Acoustics Group (PAG), which aims to advance and disseminate advanced knowledge in the field of physical acoustics.
