Biography

Frederick M. Ausubel is an emeritus professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, known for his extensive research into host-microbe interactions over a span of 35 years. His laboratory has pioneered the use of molecular genetics to investigate the immune responses of plants to various pathogens, utilizing model organisms such as Arabidopsis thaliana and Caenorhabditis elegans. Ausubel's work has revealed critical insights into the molecular mechanisms through which plants recognize pathogenic threats and activate immune responses. In the 1970s and 1980s, he focused on the molecular basis of symbiotic nitrogen fixation, working closely with bacterial symbionts. His current research examines microbial pathogenesis and host defense mechanisms, particularly concerning the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Notably, he has developed high-throughput genomic models to explore virulence factors and has significantly contributed to the understanding of innate immune signaling pathways in both plant and nematode hosts. Ausubel has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has also served as a founding editor for the widely-read journal 'Current Protocols in Molecular Biology'.
