Biography

Frederick R. Dickinson is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of History. He specializes in Japanese History and has a notable focus on modern political events, international relations, and World History. Born in Tokyo and raised in Kanazawa and Kyoto, Japan, Dickinson teaches various courses related to modern Japan, including the impact of empire, politics, and nationalism in East Asia. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. in History from Yale University, as well as another M.A. in International Politics from Kyoto University. His published works include 'War National Reinvention: Japan Great War, 1914 - 1919' and 'World War Triumph New Japan, 1919-1930'. He has been involved in numerous research and teaching positions both domestically and internationally, including visiting professorships at Swarthmore College and Kyoto University. Dickinson has received grants from the Japanese Ministry of Education, the Fulbright Commission, and the Japan Foundation, and has been recognized as a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution in Stanford University.
