Dr. Frederik Jan Van Schooten

Biography

Professor van Schooten has over 35 years of senior management experience in life sciences research and academic education, having led departments in faculty management and public health policy, as well as the valorization of science. He has published more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals with an H-index of 80, and has obtained numerous research grants. As an external reviewer, he has contributed to Dutch and foreign scientific programs. He teaches in both Bachelor and Master educational programs in Biomedical Sciences and Health Sciences and has supervised 50 PhD students. He is a member of the Dutch Health Council and serves on associated ad hoc committees. Additionally, he is the President of the Dutch Society of Toxicology (NVT). His research focuses on molecular epidemiology, specifically the development of biomarkers for inflammation and DNA damage repair, exploring genetic susceptibility to diseases. His overarching goal is to understand disease etiology to foster opportunities for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. His research highlights the induction and prevention of chronic diseases, particularly those related to inhalatory exposures from tobacco, vaping, microplastics, and air pollution, as well as oral exposures from food processing mutagens and contaminants. He applies both in vitro and in vivo models, employing metabolomics approaches with exhaled air to assess volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for early diagnosis and monitoring therapeutic responses in inflammation-related diseases affecting the gut, liver, and lungs.
