Biography

Frederik Rom Taxhjelm is a PhD fellow and researcher at the University of Copenhagen, focusing on the complex dynamics of inmates’ voluntary isolation in Danish prisons. His research examines the implications of isolation on fundamental human rights and its recognized detrimental health effects. The project aims to capture a central paradox by investigating why nearly 800 inmates each year prefer isolation in a prison system that international research defines as exceptionally gentle and humane. Funded in part by the Institute for Human Rights, the project emphasizes inmates’ right to a safe, meaningful, and proportional punishment and is scheduled to run from 2022 to 2025.
