Dr. Fredrik Almqvist

Biography

Fredrik Almqvist is a professor in organic chemistry at Umeå University, focusing on innovative solutions to infectious neurodegenerative diseases. He leads the Umeå Center for Microbial Research (UCMR) and has developed significant research qualifications as a docent. His lab emphasizes method developments in organic synthesis, particularly the design and synthesis of molecules that interact with macromolecules, including inhibitors of protein-protein interactions. Notable projects include the design of ring-fused 2-pyridone compounds and peptidomimetics, developed in collaboration with Dr. Hultgren at Washington University in St. Louis, aimed at creating antivirulence compounds. Almqvist's work on small molecules called 'pilicides' has notably enhanced the understanding of the chaperone-usher pathway in uropathogenic E. coli, crucial for biofilm formation. His collaborations extend to tackling tuberculosis treatment through the discovery of mycobacterial tolerance inhibitors. His lab has received substantial grants and recognition for its impactful work in combating antibiotic resistance and developing new antimicrobial strategies.
