Dr. Freya Johnston

Biography

Freya Johnston is a Professor of English at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow at St Anne's College. She specializes in the Romantic period, particularly the works of Samuel Johnson, Jane Austen, and various 18th-century literary figures. Johnston has published extensively, including two books on Samuel Johnson and an edited collection of Jane Austen’s writings. Her recent works include 'Jane Austen, Early Late,' published by Princeton University Press in 2021, and her forthcoming projects feature a book on Samuel Johnson’s unwritten texts. She co-edits the journal 'Essays in Criticism' and regularly contributes to notable reviews such as 'The Literary Review' and 'The London Review of Books.' Johnston's research interests encompass a broad array of topics including Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, and William Hazlitt, along with a focus on German literature, notably Franz Kafka. She plays an active role in graduate supervision and has guided numerous DPhil candidates in their research.
