Biography

Freya Mowat is an Assistant Professor at the McPherson Eye Research Institute, University of Wisconsin–Madison. She holds a BVSc from the University of Bristol and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from University College London. Mowat's research focuses on retinal aging, concentrating on the mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of the central retina, particularly in relation to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She investigates changes in mitochondrial structure and function within the context of aging and disease. Her work includes utilizing naturally occurring transgenic animal models, as well as companion animals, to study naturally occurring blinding diseases and their implications for human health. Through her research, Mowat aims to understand and ultimately protect and restore vision in aging populations.
