Professor Frieder Mugele has an extensive academic background in the field of physics, having studied at the University of Konstanz in Germany where he obtained his PhD in 1997. His research primarily focuses on surface science, specifically diffusion on metal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. After completing his postdoctoral research as a Humboldt Fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1998/99, he developed a keen interest in liquid-solid interfaces and confined liquids. From 1999 to 2004, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Ulm in Germany, where he extended his research to wetting of functionalized surfaces, particularly in the area of electrowetting. In 2004, he was appointed a full professor in Physics of Complex Fluids at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, leading a group of around 25 researchers who focus on both fundamental and applied aspects of fluid interfaces across molecular to macroscopic scales. His research interests encompass electrowetting, dynamic wetting, microfluidics, and more, with applications in inkjet printing, immersion lithography, and lab-on-a-chip systems.
