Dr. Friederike Fless

Biography

Friederike Fless is a professor at the Institute of Classical Archeology at Freie Universität Berlin. Born in Unna, Germany, she trained in Classical Archeology, Art History, and Ancient History at various universities, including Trier, Würzburg, and Mainz. Fless completed her PhD at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz with a dissertation on the iconography of sacrificial attendants and cult musicians in historical Roman reliefs. Her career includes research fellowships and academic positions, including assistant professor roles at the University of Cologne and the University of Leipzig. Prominent in her field, Fless is known for her work on Attic red-figure vases and various research contributions to the context of the ancient Mediterranean. She has held leadership roles in professional associations, including serving as president of the German Archaeological Association and vice president of the German Associations for Archaeology. Fless has published extensively, including monographs and collaborative volumes on diverse archeological and cultural topics. Her interests encompass the cultural identity carried by artifacts and the interchange between cultures in the ancient world. Fless is also a notable member of the Central Directorate of the German Archaeological Institute and has been involved in various academic committees and projects throughout her career.
