Dr. Friederike Jayes

Biography

Friederike Luking Jayes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University. She is a trained Reproductive Physiologist with extensive experience in basic and translational research, which is vital for improving women's health. Her current research focuses on understanding uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors that pose significant health challenges and lead to high rates of hysterectomy, particularly affecting Black women at a younger age. Jayes is investigating innovative treatment strategies that include local injection of purified collagenase into fibroids, offering a non-hormonal alternative that could potentially avoid surgery. She actively collaborates with Dr. Darlene Taylor from North Carolina Central University on developing drug delivery systems that enhance the localization and efficacy of anti-fibrotic treatments. In addition to her research, Jayes is passionate about mentoring and developing the next generation of biomedical professionals. She is involved in various programs aimed at enhancing diversity within the biomedical workforce, including NIH-funded initiatives and career development awards.
