Biography

Fritz Prinz is the Leonardo Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science Engineering at Stanford University. He also serves as a Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. With a solid-state physicist background, Prinz leads a group of doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and visiting scholars focused on fundamental issues in energy conversion and storage at the nanoscale. His laboratory employs a wide range of nano-fabrication technologies to build prototype fuel cells and capacitors, exploring novel material structures through techniques such as atomic layer deposition and scanning tunneling microscopy. His research includes atomic-scale modeling to gain insights into charge separation and recombination processes. Since joining Stanford in 1994, Prinz has also held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon University and has received several honors, including the Engineer of the Year award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and being named a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
