Dr. Funda Atun

Biography

Funda Atun is an Associate Professor at the University of Twente, specializing in disaster risk reduction, complex city systems, and societal resilience. She obtained her PhD in 2013 from Politecnico di Milano, where she focused on societal resilience in transportation systems and environmental disasters. Since then, she has coordinated and contributed to numerous EU-funded projects aimed at increasing resilience to disasters through innovative approaches. Her research emphasizes understanding socio-technical dynamics in urban settings and the need for effective disaster management strategies. Funda has a rich experience in team leadership and collaborative projects, bringing together stakeholders from various backgrounds, including research organizations, NGOs, and local authorities. She is an active member of the Integrated Disaster Risk Management Society and has contributed to international scientific advisory boards. Her recent research focuses on developing dynamic risk assessment tools and nature-based solutions for urban sustainability. Funda has successfully supervised multiple MSc and PhD students, with research topics ranging from urban flood mitigation to assessing climate change impacts on vulnerable populations. Her work highlights the importance of transdisciplinary approaches in addressing contemporary challenges in disaster risk management.
