Biography

The Bowman Lab at Johns Hopkins University focuses on understanding how nucleosomes, the repeating structures that package genomic DNA in eukaryotic cells, are reorganized and remodeled in response to various cellular processes such as DNA replication, repair, recombination, and transcription. Nucleosomes consist of a central histone core wrapped by approximately 146 base pairs of DNA, serving as the basic packaging unit of chromosomes. This intrinsic nature of nucleosomes limits access to DNA, necessitating the action of a class of enzymes known as chromatin remodelers. The lab employs a combination of biochemistry, structural biology, and single-molecule biophysics to elucidate the regulation and action of chromatin remodelers at a molecular level.
