Biography

G. Thomas Goodnight is a professor at USC Annenberg, where he has been since 2002. Prior to this, he was a faculty member at Northwestern University from 1975 to 2002. Goodnight has a rich career in academia, having directed 50 doctoral dissertations in Communication and Rhetoric, and receiving accolades as a distinguished mentor that has led his graduates to successful careers. In 2014, he was elected a distinguished scholar by the National Communication Association. His research expertise encompasses Argumentation, Advocacy Rhetoric, Ethics, Global, and Public Diplomacy. He has also been a Fulbright Senior Scholar, engaging in research and speaking on communication programs across various continents including Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Africa. Goodnight's current work involves advanced studies in communication, focusing on themes such as sustainability deliberation, resilience in cities, social theories in the cybersphere, and energy diplomacies. In fall 2023, he will serve as a Fellow at Fudan University in Shanghai and as a guest scholar at Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he will present reports on nested thinking, network pragmatics, and cultural diplomacy in the political economies of communication.
