Dr. Gabe Gomes

Biography

Gabe Gomes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University, where he leads the Gomes Group. His research bridges the fields of machine learning and organic chemistry, focusing on the development of new chemical reactions, catalysts, and materials utilizing state-of-the-art machine learning for automated synthesis. Gomes previously worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Matter Lab at the University of Toronto under Professor Alán Aspuru-Guzik, investigating AI-driven catalyst design. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Florida State University in 2018, where his dissertation focused on controlling chemical reactivity through stereoelectronic effects. Gomes has received several prestigious awards, including the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship and the FSU Graduate Student Research Creativity Award. His educational background includes a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gomes has contributed to various interdisciplinary teams and has been involved in notable projects that aim to accelerate materials discovery through computational chemistry.
