Biography

Gabor Kelen, M.D., FRCP(C), FACEP, FAAEM, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Kelen is known for his pivotal contributions to emergency medicine, particularly related to HIV and blood-borne pathogens. His foundational research has influenced national policies on universal precautions and the implementation of HIV testing and counseling programs in emergency departments. In 2002, he became the Director of the Johns Hopkins Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR). Under his leadership, the office has focused on disaster response and preparedness, especially regarding high-impact events such as terrorism. Dr. Kelen has received substantial funding for his research since 1987, including major grants from the Department of Homeland Security. His extensive bibliography includes over 175 publications, and he has been recognized with numerous awards for his leadership and contributions to the field. Additionally, he is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences.
