Dr. Gabeba Baderoon

Biography

Gabeba Baderoon is an Associate Professor at Penn State, specializing in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, African Studies, and Comparative Literature. She earned her PhD in English from the University of Cape Town and has received various fellowships, including at the Africana Research Center. Baderoon co-directs the African Feminist Initiative and has notable courtesy appointments in Social Thought at the School of International Affairs. Her research interests encompass Islam, African publics, and religious values, and her expertise includes the impact of gender in post-apartheid contexts in South Africa. Baderoon is also a celebrated author, known for works such as 'Muslims: Slavery Post-Apartheid,' which received the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences Non-fiction Monograph Award, and she has published poetry collections including 'Dream Body' and 'Hundred Silences.' Her contributions to scholarly discussions on race, gender, and culture in Africa have been recognized with various awards, including the University of Johannesburg Prize for South African Writing. Additionally, she has co-edited the essay collection 'Surfacing: Black Feminist,' showcasing her commitment to advancing scholarly dialogue among feminist discourses in Africa.
