Biography

Gabriel Martinez is a Cuban-American visual artist originally from Miami, Florida, specializing in photography and performance installation. He has received numerous accolades, including the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2001 and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship in 2003. He has been awarded Individual Artists Grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and has participated in various national artist residencies, including programs at the Rosenbach Museum & Library and the Fabric Workshop & Museum in Philadelphia, as well as the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida and the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. His works have been featured in performance-oriented events and installations at prominent venues such as the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia. Martinez attended the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in 2003 and is known for his contributions to the upcoming Phaidon Press publication "Art & Queer Culture" as part of their Themes & Movements Series.
