Biography

Gabriel Rinkel is a Full Professor of Neurology at the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands. He completed his medical studies and engaged in extracurricular research at the Rudolf Magnus Institute in Utrecht, focused on the effect of neuropeptides on behavior. He participated in an exchange program at the Addiction Research Foundation, University of Toronto, Canada. In 1991, he finished his clinical training in neurology and defended his PhD thesis on perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage. As a clinician, teacher, and researcher, he has held managerial roles, including chairing the department. In 1997, he received the award for 'Teacher of the Year' from the Faculty of Medicine. He has supervised numerous master's students and more than 35 PhD students. Rinkel is considered a world-leading authority on subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracranial aneurysms, having published over 400 papers internationally. His research group focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of stroke and intracranial vasculopathies, with the ultimate goal of improving treatment strategies and prognosis for these conditions.
