Biography

Gabriel de Avilez Rocha is an Assistant Professor specializing in Early Modern Portuguese History at Brown University. He received his Ph.D. from New York University in 2016. His research focuses on social, environmental, and maritime history, colonialism, and slavery within the early Atlantic world, examining the intricate linkages among Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and Iberia. Rocha has published articles and essays in prominent journals such as the William & Mary Quarterly, Colonial Latin American Review, and Early American Studies. His teaching and research interests encompass the early modern Iberian imperial worlds, the Black Atlantic, global environmental history, ecocriticism, microhistory methods, and community engagement.
