Biography

Gabriel Scheidecker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies at the University of Zurich. He received his PhD in Social Cultural Anthropology from the Free University of Berlin in 2015 and graduated from the University of Freiburg, Germany, in Philosophy Historical Anthropology. His research interests include anthropology of childhood, emotion and affect, migration, family relations, international development, and early childhood interventions, focusing on cross-disciplinary collaborations. Scheidecker is currently the principal investigator of the project “Saving Brains? Applying Ethnography Early Childhood Interventions Global South” (2023-2028), which is funded by the SNSF Starting Grant. This project aims to conduct ethnographic research on early interventions and to initiate cross-disciplinary debates regarding the scientific and ethical validity of these interventions. His previous postdoctoral work focused on children and families in Berlin and the history of Vietnamese migration, alongside interactions with childcare institutions and parenting support. For his PhD, he researched emotion socialization and relationship formation within a rural community in Madagascar.
