Gabriel Waksman obtained his Ph.D. in 1982 from the University of Paris. He has had a brief period in industry and completed his postdoctoral training at Rockefeller University in New York. In 1993, he joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, USA. By 2000, he became the Alumni Endowed Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, and in 2002, he was appointed the Roy and Diana Vagelos Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. In 2003, he relocated to London to take the Joint Chair in Structural Molecular Biology at University College London and Birkbeck College. The same year, he was awarded the Wolfson-Royal Society Merit Award and appointed Head of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology at UCL/Birkbeck. In 2006, he was named the Courtauld Chair of Biochemistry at UCL, later becoming Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Waksman has held various leadership positions, stepping down in 2019. He was elected a member of EMBO in 2007 and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2008 and the Royal Society in 2012. His research focuses on Structural Biology and Bacterial Secretion Systems, supported by a senior investigator award from the Wellcome Trust and a programme grant from the MRC.
