Dr. Gabriele Balbi

Biography

Gabriele Balbi is a Full Professor in Media Studies at the Institute of Media and Journalism (IMeG) at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI). He serves as Pro-Rector for Education and the Students' Experience, and is the director of the China Media Observatory. Balbi has been highly involved in academia, currently chairing the ICA Communication History Division and participating in various committees including the Media History Association and the ECREA Communication History Section. He has taught at prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Oxford, focusing his research on media communication history, particularly exploring the historical perspectives of telecommunications and digital media. His research areas also encompass media studies with an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating elements from history, media archaeology, political economy, and cultural studies. Balbi has contributed significantly to the scholarly community, publishing around 100 articles in various academic journals. His work has been supported by multiple grants from institutions such as the Swiss National Science Foundation and the China Scholarship Council. Balbi also has an interest in the historiography of Chinese media, examining the strategies of Chinese media companies.
