Dr. Gabriele Brandstetter

Biography

Gabriele Brandstetter is a full professor at the Freie Universität Berlin, specializing in Theatre Studies with a focus on Dance Studies. Her academic journey began with studies in German Studies, History, Political Science, and Theatre Studies across renowned institutions including Erlangen, Munich, Regensburg, and Vienna. She completed her doctorate in 1983, focusing on the intersection of eroticism and religiosity in poetry. Her professional trajectory includes significant roles as a research assistant and lecturer at the University of Bayreuth, which set the foundation for her later academic contributions. Brandstetter's habilitation examined the relationships between dance, theatre, and literature during the early 20th century, marking her as a leading figure in the discipline. She founded the Centre for Movement Research at Freie Universität and serves as co-director of the International Research College "Interweaving Performance Cultures." Her research interests include contemporary theatre, the history and aesthetics of dance, gender theories, and the experimental nature of modern dance. Gabriele’s work has gained national and international recognition, making her a prominent advocate for the interconnectedness of choreography with ecological and social practices.
