Professor Dr. Gabriele Pergola

Biography

Gabriele Pergola is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick. His current research focuses on the application of statistical models in machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) for text understanding. He is particularly interested in sentiment analysis, question answering, topic and event extraction, and clinical text mining, exploring the intricate relationship between language and information. Previously, he was a Research Fellow under the Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship, working alongside Professor Yulan He, where he developed advanced NLP frameworks in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. His projects aim to enhance investigative capabilities through innovative AI systems designed to detect messages related to violence against women and girls (VAWG) and analyze drug-related communication networks. In addition to his research, he is involved in policy automation projects with the UK government, leveraging NLP for digital immigration systems and providing insights that inform policy-making. He has organized NLP discussion meetings at the University of Warwick, fostering a collaborative environment among students and researchers in the field. Gabriele teaches various modules related to natural language processing and data mining, contributing significantly to the academic community.
