Biography

Gabriella Gobbi’s laboratory is focused on understanding the causes of mental diseases and discovering new treatments. In particular, the laboratory studies the short- and long-term effects of cannabis use on mood and anxiety, as well as the potential beneficial effects of drugs acting on the endocannabinoid system in curing mental diseases. The lab also investigates the mechanisms of action of hallucinogens and their potential therapeutic effects. Additionally, the laboratory examines the effects of melatonin on mood, anxiety, and sleep regulation, aiming to understand novel selective ligands for melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) used to treat seasonal depression, major depression, sleep disorders, and neuropsychiatric conditions. The laboratory's approach spans from bench to bedside, bridging gaps between fundamental and clinical research. Laboratory techniques include in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, behavioral pharmacology, and neurochemistry. Dr. Gobbi is a psychiatrist in the Mood Disorders Program at the McGill University Health Centre, with interests in psychopharmacology, violent behavior, and the neurobiological consequences of paternal separation.
