Biography

Gabriella Safran is the Eva Chernov Lokey Professor of Jewish Studies and a Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Stanford University. She has a prominent academic background in Russian, Polish, Yiddish, and French literatures and cultures. Her recent monograph, 'Wandering Soul: Dybbuk's Creator, S. An-sky' (Harvard, 2010), presents a biography of the early-twentieth-century Russian-Yiddish writer, ethnographer, revolutionary, and wartime relief worker, S. An-sky. Her teaching and research focus on Russian and Yiddish literature, folklore, and folkloristics. Currently, she is engaged in several monograph projects that explore themes of social lines and vocal imitation in Russian media from the 1830s to the 1880s, as well as the international pre-history of the Jewish joke. Safran has held various administrative positions at Stanford, including as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. She has received several awards for her contributions to the field, including the National Jewish Book Award and the Aldo Jeanne Scaglione Prize.
