Biography

Gabrielle Oliveira’s research focuses on immigration mobility, exploring how people move, adapt, and parent across borders. Her expertise includes gender, anthropology, and transnationalism in the Americas. Merging anthropology and education, Oliveira conducts ethnographic work in multiple countries, studying the educational trajectories of immigrant children. She is the author of 'Motherhood Across Borders: Immigrants and Their Children in Mexico and New York City' (NYU Press), which received the inaugural Erickson Hornberger Book Award from the University of Pennsylvania's Ethnography Forum. Oliveira, originally from São Paulo, Brazil, earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City. She is a recipient of the National Academy of Education and is involved with a group called 'Colectiva Infancias,' which received a grant from the National Geographic Foundation to create a public-facing website documenting the stories of immigrant children migrating through the Americas. She has extensively studied Brazilian migration to Massachusetts, particularly focusing on how immigrant children and their families navigate educational systems amid the global pandemic. Additionally, Oliveira collaborates with teachers in dual language programs to understand educational practices in classrooms. Her publications can be found in journals such as Anthropology & Education Quarterly, Diaspora, Indigenous, Minority Education, Bilingual Research Journal, and TESOL Quarterly.
