Biography

Gaétan de Rassenfosse is an economist focusing on innovation economics and intellectual property. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from Université Libre de Bruxelles. Following his doctoral studies, he spent a year as the Chief Economist on the team at the European Patent Office, working on patent statistics and policy analysis. He held a postdoctoral position at the University of Melbourne, in the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, where he applied large-scale data sets to research on R&D, intellectual property, and innovation policy. His research interests include the creation and commercialization of new technologies, measuring R&D and intangible assets, and competition issues related to technology transfer and standard-setting. He combines expertise in econometrics with machine learning to provide evidence that aids policymakers, firms, and courts in understanding and implementing effective innovation policies. He also runs a mission lab studying innovation systems and aims to produce rigorous, data-driven evidence to support the design of innovation policies and informed decision-making regarding new technologies.
