Biography

Since 2010, Gaétan Mayer is a professor at the Université de Montréal and director of the cellular and molecular biology laboratory at the Montreal Heart Institute. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms controlling blood cholesterol levels, a major contributor to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. His laboratory aims to characterize the action mechanisms of proprotein convertases, such as PCSK9, which lead to increased 'bad' cholesterol in humans and their role in the etiology of metabolic syndrome. The lab conducts research on factors influencing PCSK9 activity, triglyceride metabolism, and atherosclerosis progression. These studies aim to develop innovative therapeutic approaches to treat hypercholesterolemia and reduce mortality from cardiovascular diseases. His work has received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and Quebec, the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation.
